WannaCry also created quite a stir in the second quarter, with our analysts producing three reports and multiple blog posts on this emerging threat. What proved most interesting to us, was the probable linkage to Lazarus group as the source of the attacks, as well as the origins of the malware. GReAT researchers were able to trace back some of its earliest usage and show that before the ‘EternalBlue’ exploit was added to version 2, WannaCry v1 was used in spearphishing attacks months prior.
